Audition details:
Auditions will be held in approximately 1 hour times slots, in small groups. There will be a mixture of reading and improvising. Each auditionee will be given the opportunity to read/improvise the character they’re auditioning for. An excerpt for each character is at the back of this audition pack. Come prepared to work with others as a team. If you have difficulty reading aloud for any reason, please let us know in advance, so we can assist you in the best way. We will knock together an improvisation piece for you.

Important Rehearsal details:
Rehearsals will be on Sundays during the day and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. More rehearsal hours are likely to be added closer to the production dates. These extra rehearsal times will be communicated to you as soon as possible. Performances are at Niblick Hall.

About the play:
Pam is fed up with life – her husband Tom barely notices her or the kids, and is always off playing rugby or down at the clubrooms. Is this really all there is to life? A friend mentions that she’s started playing rugby and suddenly Pam decides if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! She has friends who want to give it a crack as it turns out, maybe beat the local men’s rugby team. Go the Hurridames!
David Geary’s Pack of Girls is a funny, insightful play about a group of rural women who decide to give the blokes a run for their money. There are also blokes in this show, and women who double as blokes! Unlike Foreskin’s Lament, rugby is played onstage.

Characters:
Pam – mid 20’s to late 30’s – shortish. Halfback. Short tempered, frustrated, hard-working. Pam is bored with her life, so decides to get her friends together to form a women’s rugby team.

Tom – mid 20’s to mid 30’s. Rather serious, rugby-obsessed, little sense of humour or imagination, he’s drifted through life with only one thing on his mind – being a Hurricane. But he isn’t a Hurricane.

Hazel – mid 20’s to 40’s – strong build. Māori - there’s a haka to be performed! Recently widowed, defensive, struggling with grief and drinking heavily, Hazel is straight up and feisty. As the play moves on, she learns to appreciate her teammates more.

Harry/Commentator/Doug - 40’s - Harry is reasonable, kind, conventional and friendly. He possibly fancies Hazel, but she’s not having a bar of it. Commentator will need to learn a Welsh accent (coaching available) and will also need to imitate Murray Mexted’s voice. Doug is a bit slow, loves his rugby, scruffy. Hooker.

DPB/Possum - 30’s to 40’s - She’s independent, self assured, honest and self reliant, can be a little defensive. Thinks things through. A solid friend to all. Possum is a bit of a whinger.

Lucy – 20’s to 30’s. Winger. Well dressed, trophy wife to a cheating, controlling husband. Enjoys being fit. A good and supportive friend.

Trish/Basil – Tall. late 30’s to 40’s. Lock.. Laid back, impulsive, fun, but sometimes goes a bit far. Basil is sleazy to the nth degree, a real chauvinist.

Carol – 20’s to 40’s – big, solid build. Prop. Unsure of herself, but a deeply good and kind woman. Vulnerable, a little shy, accident prone. Christian. Lives at home with Mum.
Old Cop - Mostly non speaking role. Old Cop does a warm up for the women’s benefit, and shouts “Mine!”.

All genders and races are welcome to audition for any role. All cast members need to be fairly strong and reasonably fit, prepared to fall on the ground, piggyback one another around (once), tackle and be tackled and do physical exercises. You DO NOT need to know how to play rugby, but you need to be happy to learn!
